Music and people who are cooler than me
Sunday, April 19th, 2009Don’t you just love it when some band comes around and knocks your socks off? I feel this way about the Fleet Foxes right now. Good thing they’re coming to the acclaimed Roskilde ‘09.
Seattle is back, though in a somewhat rehabbed and more mature reincarnation of what we once loved about the Seattle grunge scene. The long hair and beards are omnipresent, and so are the checkered flannel shirts and woolly cardigans. But this time around it’s 60′ies folksy, chair choir’ish and millennia from the hard rock sound of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Mind you, the lead singer is still way cooler than you and me.
The sound is more in the general direction of Iron & Wine or (shivers) the acoustic sessions of Jeff Mangum. A sound that will be interesting to hear how will carry itself on this year’s Roskilde Festival. Last year’s Roskilde didn’t exactly treat José Gonzales’ gentle sound and acoustic guitar with any great respect. Let’s hope for a smaller scene for Fleet Foxes.
Bonus: Exceptional live version of “Blue Ridge Mountains“.
Sweden’s petite outfit First Aid Kit has made a truly impressive cover version of Fleet Foxes’ Tiger Mountain Peasant Song. They’re also on the Roskilde ‘09 roster. Their Myspace tracks are definitely worth checking out. Go ahead. Check ‘em out.
