That strange coffee sound

Monday, July 24th, 2006

Do the following; make a cup of instant coffee. Grab a mug, put some of that magical instant caffeine powder in it and add scolding hot water… Presto! - you now have coffee. Now grab a teaspoon and stir magical powder and hot water together.

Ok, so far so good. You’ve made a cup of coffee. Nothing strange to that. But now I’ll introduce you to that strange coffee sound. You may know it already.

Take the teaspoon and tap the bottom of the mug (from inside the mug, through the coffee) repeatedly. There it is! - it’s that strange coffee sound!

The sound starts of as low frequency and then slowly becomes higher and higher in pitch. Finally, the pitch reaches some sort of equilibrium in frequency as the sound remains the same. You can stop tapping the inside of your mug now.

What dictates the range and frequency of that strange coffee sound… Heat? The mass of water? The density of the mug’s basic material? God? I find that strange coffee sound insanely annoying and at the same time captivating. And I wish someone would make it stop.

Now for the really weird thing. After having stopped tapping the bottom of your mug for a while (you have to stop and read this at the same time, eh?), start doing it again. The low frequency sound is back! Continue tapping until you reach the pitch eqilibrium again. Wait five seconds. Start tapping again. This time the sound will take starting point somewhere between the low frequency sound and the equilibrium frequency. So there must also be some element of time involved in that strange coffee sound. Weird.

I find this enigma as puzzling as the size of the universe. If you know what the hell is going on, please share.

PS. Try the same with a cup of cocao, the range of the frequency is much greater. Also strange.

Roskilde Festival 2006 - Aftermath

Wednesday, July 5th, 2006

Roskilde Festival 2006 is over. Sadly. Once again it has been 4 days of excellent music and beer. 2007 will have a lot to live up to.

Best concerts: Death Cab For Cutie, Two Gallants, Martha Wainwright

Biggest “hmmm…”: When did the festival management decide to drop the red/green recycling trash cans?

Biggest thumbs up: I’m amazed at how friendly and caring people are for each other. You saw plenty of people being way too drunk, puking and passing out, but a friend would always be around to pick him/her up and guide the person back to their camp.

Worst moment: Arriving 45 minuttes early for Two Gallants thus getting the best places in front of the stage. All is well. Listening through half of the concert before realizing that my blatter was about to explode unless I relieved myself. Which I did, outside the tent, and lost my space in front of the stage.

Bluetagged at Reboot8

Thursday, June 1st, 2006

Bluetagging definition:
Tagging pictures taken with bluetooth enabled camera phones with the MAC address of the device itself plus the MAC addresses of other bluetooth enabled devices (within range).

My bluetooth phone has the following MAC address: bt=00152a2d425b. So, since my bluetooth radio has been turned on during reboot8, I will be able to search Flickr for pictures tagged with my MAC address. Which is pretty cool!

See for yourself.

Cooler still, I will be able to subscribe to a Flickr RSS feed on my specific MAC tag. I’ll always be able to see when people have taken pictures while I was in close visinity.

Check out these guys, Imity, if you want to stay tuned on bluetagging. They’re in the process of taking it to the next level.

Funny interviews

Seen at adland. Very funny. I especially like the high pitch whistling scene, I’ll have to try that little odd gag somehow on someone…

While your laughing, check out the truth in advertising - classic.
